About Rugby in Ireland

Rugby has a long history in Ireland, where in ancient times a similar game called 'caid' was often played. Ireland is one of the six countries that takes part in the annual Six Nations Championship and are the current champions (2009). The national also competes in the quadrennial Rugby World Cup. The Ireland national rugby union team represents the whole island of Ireland and is one of the few national teams that fields players from different sovereign territories (The Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland).

The Irish rugby union team has been extremely successful in the past few years, winning many matches in major rugby tournaments. Ireland is a great destination for travelling rugby supporters with a friendly atmosphere, excellent hotels and a quality game of rugby guaranteed. Rugby enthusiasts can travel to Ireland by air, but there are also numerous ferry and fast-boat services here from Britain and France.

The current home of the national team is Croke Park in Dublin, though the team will soon be moving to the Aviva Stadium, Dublin. The team also plays home games in Belfast. Interestingly, the capital of Irish rugby is said to be the city of Limerick; teams from the area have dominated the all-Ireland league since its beginnings. Regular train services run between Limerick and Dublin, connecting the city to the Irish capital and the countries largest international airport. Major tournaments that take place in Ireland are the Guinness Carrick Rugby Sevens, the Kinsale Sevens, the Limerick Sevens and the Veterans Rugby Tournament.
