Monaco is the home of the most prestigious Formula One Grand Prix, The Monaco Grand Prix. The event is one of, if not, the most important and celebrated motor races in the world. It takes place on the Circuit de Monaco, a street circuit laid out on the streets of Monte Carlo and La Condamine, Monaco's oldest districts. The Monaco Grand Prix, sometimes referred to simply as Monte Carlo, takes place annually in May.
Thousands of spectators travel to Monaco every year to be part of this exciting event. The city-state, long the playground of the rich and famous, boasts some of the most luxurious hotels in the world, such as the Hotel de Paris, the Columbus and the Grand. Many fans choose to stay in Nice, which is just 22km away and offers a wider range of more affordable hotels. The city is also home to the largest international airport in the south of France.
Fans can fly into Nice and travel to Monaco on one of the many frequent rail connections. In addition, there are excellent bus services to and around Monaco. Visitors can also take advantage of the intriguing system of public lifts that run up and down the hills of Monaco.
Another famous racing event held in Monaco is the Monte Carlo Rally, a popular race with a history going back to 1911. Formula One aside, the Circuit de Monaco also hosts F3 Euroseries and FIA GP2 competitions.
