Motor racing is one of the most popular sports and pastimes in Italy. The country has one of the best-known racetracks in the world, the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza. Known to many simply as Monza, the circuit has been the home of the Italian Grand Prix for almost its entire history. The site at Monza has three tracks it also hosts the Italian rounds of the GP2 Series, the World Touring Car Championship and the Superbike World Championship, as well as Italian GT Championship and Italian Formula Three Championship events and the 1000km Monza, a popular endurance race.
Motorcycle fans are catered for with the Italian motorcycle Grand Prix, held annually at the Mugello Circuit, and the San Marino and Rimini's Coast motorcycle Grand Prix. Likewise, Italian rally fans get there fix with the Italian Rally Championship, of which the Rallye Sanremo is a particular highlight.
Other popular motorsport events in Italy are the Uphill Car Race, Alghero Scala Piccada and the Rally del Salento, which is held in the beautiful city of Lecce and is one of the oldest races in the country.
While visiting Italy, motorsport fans often take time out of the racing schedules to explore country's picturesque landscape and beautiful towns full of exceptional artistic and architectural heritage. A good network of local and national transport services offers an inexpensive and efficient way of getting arounds. Italy also boasts excellent ferry and hydrofoil services that connect the major islands with the mainland. Accommodation can be pricey, but those prepared to look around will find plenty of hotels, pensions and guesthouses to choose from.
