The Schlögen loop has a long and varied history. In ancient times, a Roman naval base was located there. It was long considered to be one of the most dangerous sections for shipping along the entire course of the Danube. Today the river's fury is tamed by several power stations, but the section between Passau and Linz is still one of the most beautiful river landscapes in Europe.
