The hotel is owned by the Duke and Duchess of Westminster. It is located within Chester's City Walls and next to the ancient East Gate with its famous and distinctive clock tower. It is within 2 minutes walk of the medieval galleried streets known as 'The Rows'.

It also features one of the most extensive wine cellars in England. The adjoining Library and Archive are ideal for pre-dinner drinks, morning coffee, light lunches and afternoon tea. La Brasserie - an informal Parisian style restaurant - is open for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner.

The hotel was originally opened in 1865 and is now a Grade 2 listed building of historic and architectural interest. The exterior is an immensely distinctive black and white timbered facade. This very much belies the modern elegance of the hotel interior.
