Northern Ireland is home to two famous racecourses, the Downpatrick Racecourse and the Down Royal. Downpatrick Racecourse is located in County Down, about 33km south of Belfast and can easily be accessed by car of train. Races have been held here for over 300 years and many top National Hunt heroes have begun their careers on the turf at Downpatrick. The other famous racecourse in Northern Ireland is Down Royal, near Lisburn. The racetrack holds prestigious racing events such as the Ulster Derby and the Down Royal Champion Chase. The Ulster Derby is Northern Ireland's premier flat racing event and draws large crowds year after year.
Northern Ireland is relatively easy to travel around. International fans travelling here by plane or ferry will likely arrive in Belfast. Good road and rail connections make onward travel easy and it is common for fans to book hotels near the racecourses and turn the event into a small holiday, taking advantage of the local hospitality and natural beauty that Northern Ireland is famous for.
