Newmarket Racecourse is an extremely pre-eminent flat racing racecourse situated in the Suffolk town of Newmarket, England. Newmarket itself is often considered the unofficial headquarters of British racing, due to the preponderance of training yards and courses and other racing organisations and businesses in the area.
Newmarket held its first race as far back as 1622, and ever since then the horse racing centre of the world grew up around the famous town and track. The course itself is actually an amalgam of two different tracks, the Rowley Mile and the July Course. The former is used in spring and autumn, and the latter utilised mainly in summer. The course hosts many prestigious races, among them Group 1 races such as the 1,000 and 2,000 Guineas, the Champion Stakes and the July Cup.
In short, Newmarket is arguably the centre of the horse racing world, and any one with even a passing interest in the "Sport of Kings" should visit there at least once.
Travelling by road will always be amongst the most popular methods for reaching Newmarket and using a sat nav or a reputable online route planner will always be the surest way of ensuring you find it easiest. To help with this, the postcode of the course is CB8 0XE for the July course and CB8 0TG for the Rowley Mile course.
There are also public transport options for reaching Newmarket, with Rail Regular commuter services running from London Kings Cross and Liverpool Street to Cambridge, Stansted Airport and Ipswich where onward connections by rail or road can be made to Newmarket, by picking up an onward taxi for instance.
Newmarket Racecourses provide a subsidized coach service from Newmarket Town Centre, Cambridge Station and Stansted Airport, and you should see the website before you leave to check for availability and prices.
As always, taxis are available to and from the course, from a large group of taxi firms.
