Millennium Stadium visitor guide

ABOUT THE MILLENNIUM STADIUM

Built on the site of the Cardiff Arms Park, the stadium was completed in October 1999, at a cost of £130 million. The stadium is completely enclosed with curved corners and is mostly three-tiered with 125 executive boxes. The North Stand is built directly one of the stands of Cardiff Rugby Club. Insufficient space meant a third tier was impossible. The Millennium Stadium has a capacity of 74,000. The stadium features a fully retractable roof, the first of its kind to be constructed in Britain. The stadium looks totally different with it closed, and seems a little artificial, but the atmosphere is enhanced. Unusually, the grass for the pitch is only laid as required, allowing other events to take place. The facilities are first class and there is plenty of leg room and height between rows, ensuring a good view of the action. Although the stadium is huge, fans report feeling close to the playing surface. The incline of the top tier is quite steep, needing some effort to climb to the top. Acoustics first class and a great atmosphere can be generated within the stadium. Fans' reviews report a generally welcoming local population.

The stadium is home to the Welsh international football / rugby union sides. It was also the venue for domestic cup finals while Wembley was being rebuilt. The stadium offers regular tours on most days throughout the year. Alcohol is also served from one of 23 bars within the stadium, open until 15 minutes before kick off, though closed at half-time. Food outlets are limited, but many are available with close proximity to the stadium, as are various Millennium Stadium hotels perfect for your stay in Cardiff.
