Football is by far the most popular sport in Europe and Switzerland is no exception. The country has a long history in football dating back to 1895 when the Swiss Football Association was founded. The association was one of the first founded outside the UK and was a founder member of FIFA in 1904. Currently, both FIFA and UEFA are based in Switzerland. Switzerland and Austria co-hosted the recent UEFA Euro 2008 championships, with the Spanish emerging as victors.

The top tier of Swiss football is the Swiss Super League, FC Zurich are the current champions. The annual cup tournament of Switzerland is known as the Swiss Cup. The largest football stadium in Switzerland is the St. Jakob-Park in Basel. It is the home ground of FC Basel, one of the country's most successful teams. Other Swiss stadiums of note are the Stade de Suisse Wankdorf, Stade de Geneve and the Letzigrund, the homes of BSC Young Boys, Servette FC and FC Zurich respectively. All stadiums mentioned hosted matches during the recent UEFA Euro 2008 competition.
