Located between Johannesburg’s city centre and the western township of Soweto, Soccer City Stadium is equipped with a fine range of accommodation options to suit all tastes and budgets.
Something of a novelty hotel near to Soccer City Stadium is the 4-star Protea Hotel Gold Reef City. Located a short walk to the east of the stadium, this hotel is built around a gold mine shaft that has been transformed into a theme park celebrating the area’s mining past, and would be a good choice for families.
Just north of the centre lies Parktown, an up-scale suburb with homes dating back to the late 19th Century, and several cozy cottages and guesthouses. Nearby is the equally trendy district of Melville, which enjoys a buzzing nightlife, excellent restaurants and several inexpensive guesthouses.
The central business district is generally swerved by tourists, as it has a reputation for being unsafe. However with the right precautions, there is plenty to see here, and its hotels are cheaper than other parts of the city. One of the best is the 4-star Hotel Parktonian, located in Gauteng in the north of the centre.
For sight-seeing enthusiasts with an interest in South Africa’s infamous past, those wanting to explore the historical township of Soweto may enjoy the proximity of the 4-star Holiday Inn Soweto-Freedom Square, which is around 4 miles west of the stadium.
Golf enthusiasts who fancy a relaxing swing of the clubs in between frenetic soccer matches will enjoy the 3-star Gold Reef Place Guest House, 2.5 miles east of the stadium, which is close to three high quality golf courses.
