The Philips Stadion has been the home ground of PSV Eindhoven since the clubs creation in 1913. The club was formed as the works team for the employees of the Philips electronics company, hence the initials PSV, which stand for Philips Sport Vereniging (Philips Sports Union). The ground still stands on the same spot that the original pitch was located. The stadium currently has a capacity of 35,119 although there may be plans to expand this to 45,000 at some point in the future. The Philips Stadion has a UEFA 4-star rating and was one of the venues chosen to host matches during the UEFA Euro 2000 football tournament. The ground also hosted the final of the 2006 UEFA Cup, where Spanish side Sevilla FC beat Middlesbrough 4-0.
Guided tours of the ground are available for groups of ten people or more. Tours run Mondays to Saturdays except on match days and holiday. They take around an hour and a half and need to be booked in advance; the cost is 12.50 Euros for adults and 9.50 Euros for children under 13, the price includes a drink and a slice of cake.
The stadium is located right in the city centre, just over half a mile from the main train station. Fans looking for a hotel near the Philips Stadion will find plenty of choice nearby; MATCHhotels.com lists nine hotels under a mile from the ground.
Eindhoven Airport serves the city of Eindhoven; if you are coming to watch your team play at the Philips Stadion then it is likely you will be arriving by plane here. The airport is located just 4 miles west of the city centre. A frequent bus service runs between the airport and Eindhoven's central train station; the journey takes around 25 minutes. Eindhoven Airport is the second busiest in the Netherlands; Amsterdam's airport Schiphol handles substantially more traffic (48 millions passengers in 2007 compared to Eindhoven's 1.5 million). If you are coming to Eindhoven via Schiphol Airport you will be pleased to know that trains to Eindhoven can be caught from the train station beneath the airports terminal building.
The ground is a short walk from the city centre and is easy to find on a match day, so fans staying in a hotel near the Philips Stadion are advised to take a pleasant stroll through the streets of Eindhoven on route to the match. Those that don't fancy the walk should head for the main train station and hop on a number 16 or 17 bus.
