Being the most popular sport in the country, football has a large, enthusiastic following in Hungary. Although the once illustrious national team has seen a gradual decline in recent decades, fortunes seem to be improving and Hungary are close to qualifying for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
The largest football stadium in Hungary and the home of the Hungarian national team is the Stadium Puskas Ferenc in Budapest. Budapest is the heart of Hungarian football, as not only is it home to the national side, it is also home to around a third of Hungary's top football clubs. During the 2008-09 season of the Hungarian National Championship 1, the top tier of Hungarian football, five of the sixteen teams competing came from the capital. Famous teams from Budapest include MTK Hungaria FC, Budapest Honved FC and Ferencvarosi TC.
Budapest is home to Hungary's biggest airport, Budapest Ferihegy International Airport. Fans travelling to Hungary to see their team play will likely arrive here. The country also enjoys fast and frequent rail services, with direct services arriving in Budapest from many major destinations across Europe. Budapest is famous for its thermal baths and travelling fans often combine their stay here with a short holiday.
Other football stadiums of note are the Szusza Ferenc Stadium and the highly anticipated Debrecen Stadion, scheduled for completion in 2010.
