Oakwell has been the faithful home of Barnsley F.C, The Tykes, for over 120 years. Although ground has been modernised over the last two decades, part of the stadium, the vintage looking West Stand, harks back to the early 1900's (including some original seats). Oakwell has a capacity of 23,009 although the present average attendance is around half this. The attendance record for the ground was a turn out of 40,255 for an FA Cup 5th Round match against Stoke City in 1936. Barnsley F.C hold a claim to fame as having spent more seasons in the second tier of English football than any other team. Away fans will find themselves seated in the North Stand, which after being opened in 1999 is the newest stand in the ground. The seating is split between home and away fans with away tickets being allocated on demand. Travelling supporters regularly comment on the great acoustics at Oakwell, providing a great atmosphere even if the ground is at less than capacity. Facilities at the ground are good, the usual snacks and refreshments are available (pies, burgers, hotdogs, chips and drinks etc). Alcohol is available on the North Stand concourse but if the stand is shared between home and away fans, which it usually is, then fans will find that the bar is on the home side. Overall Oakwell is agreed to be a welcoming ground and a pleasant day out but fans are advised to be careful drinking in local pubs or visiting the town centre while wearing opposition colours. The stadium is located close to the centre of Barnsley, good news for those staying in a hotel near Oakwell as the town centre and all its attractions will be close by.
