Football (soccer) one of the most popular sports in Australia, and while not drawing the big crowds typical of Australian rules football, the game enjoys a loyal and enthusiastic following. The national team is four-time Oceanic Football Confederation champion and since 2006 has been playing in the Asian Football Confederation, where it is currently the highest FIFA ranked team in Asia. The Australian national team has played at two World Cup tournaments (1974 & 2006) and has qualified for the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa.
The national team play their home games all around the country, with the Sydney Football Stadium, ANZ Stadium (Sydney), Etihad Stadium (Melbourne), Melbourne Cricket Ground and Suncorp Stadium (Brisbane) usually being regarded as home stadiums.
The big domestic football competition is the A-League, which held its inaugural season in 2005-06. At present there are no national knockout events, but there are cups at regional and state level.
Australia is a big tourist destination, so it is an understandably popular with travelling football fans. All major cities are home to international airports and efficient public transport networks. The sheer size of the country means that by air is usually the best way to travel around, although the rail network is often a good way to explore the country's splendid landscape.
