Horse racing is a popular sport that has been practiced for many centuries in many different countries around the world. The most common form of horse racing in Europe is Thoroughbred racing, the so-called 'Sport of Kings'. Thoroughbred racing comes in two forms, flat racing and jump racing. Breeding, training and racing is largely supported by gambling, and millions can be won by outstanding horses in a season. Though often seen as an elitist sport, horse racing is enjoyed by enthusiasts the world over; the big races can be a huge crowd draw and 'having a flutter' (placing a bet), at these events has become a ritual for some, even if they don't follow the sport.

Horse racing is an excellent afternoon packed full of thrills and excitement. It is a sport that incorporates a whole range of social events, often combining racing with glamour. Many horse racing tracks worldwide are set in beautiful areas of countryside with picturesque landscapes and views, so it is no surprise the sport is often combined with a short getaway in a countryside hotel. Racing fans usually have a wealth of hotels and boutique B&Bs to choose from near the race course and such track side accommodation is usually booked out well in advance, especially for big events in the worldwide racing calendar, such as the Grand National, Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, Palio di Siena and the Kentucky Derby.

Famous racing courses from around the world include; Aintree, Ascot, Chantilly, Longchamp, Saratoga Springs and the Singapore Turf Club.
